In search of a musical experience beyond the confines of commerciality, I embarked on a project that was devoid of funding in its inception. Word of mouth fueled the growth of a dedicated audience for the monthly performances. However, back in 2013, I lacked the resources, both in terms of time and inclination, to make this project more widely accessible.
Yet, despite the passing years, this project remained etched in the memories of those who experienced it firsthand. As I revisited the material – consisting of audio recordings, videos, photographs, and poetry – I was struck by its unyielding beauty. Indeed, the project captivated a diverse group of individuals, drawing them into its extraordinary orbit. The performances themselves were a spectacle to behold, featuring dancers intertwined amidst the lush bracken and balancing on logs, accompanied by the resonant melodies of guitars, bass clarinet, double bass, and harp. Even a choir braved the night’s rain to add their voices to the mesmerizing tapestry of sounds. Collaborations arising from this project continued long after its initial conclusion. Recently, writer Ross Sutherland incorporated some of this music into an episode of Josie Long’s Shortcuts on BBC Radio 4, underscoring the lasting impact of these creations.
Today, a decade has passed, and I find myself contemplating the insights gleaned from this extraordinary endeavor. Just like the piano, I have aged and undergone transformations. Hence, before it becomes too late, I have resolved to release this material every month over the coming year, adhering to the original project’s structure. To ensure the highest quality, I have enlisted the expertise of the talented producer, Sean Williams, who has diligently re-edited, mixed, and mastered these recordings – an aural journey best appreciated through the intimacy of headphones. These monthly releases will culminate in a momentous performance and book launch in May 2025, where the exceptional photography, poetry, and other textual elements from the project will take center stage.
Often, I am asked about the fate of the piano, a decade on. Last year, I embarked on a pilgrimage to pay it a visit. Eventually, after braving through a sea of brambles, I uncovered mere fragments – a handful of weathered wood, a coil of rusty strings, and a collection of iron tuning pegs. These remnants bear testament to an experience that will forever remain in the realm of cherished memories.
In cerca di un’esperienza musicale al di fuori dei confini della commercialità, mi sono avventurato in un progetto che, fin dalla sua nascita, era privo di finanziamenti. Il passaparola ha alimentato la crescita di un pubblico fedele per le performance mensili. Tuttavia, nel 2013, mancavo delle risorse, sia in termini di tempo che di inclinazione, per rendere questo progetto più accessibile al pubblico.
Nonostante gli anni trascorsi, questo progetto è rimasto impresso nella memoria di coloro che lo hanno vissuto in prima persona. Persino un coro ha sfidato la pioggia della notte per aggiungere le loro voci al magico intreccio di suoni. Le collaborazioni nate da questo progetto sono continuate a lungo dopo la sua conclusione iniziale. Di recente, lo scrittore Ross Sutherland ha incorporato parte di questa musica in un episodio di Shortcuts di Josie Long su BBC Radio 4, sottolineando l’importanza duratura di queste creazioni.
Oggi sono passati dieci anni e mi ritrovo a riflettere sulle intuizioni ricavate da questa straordinaria impresa. Come il piano, sono invecchiato e ho subito trasformazioni. Pertanto, prima che sia troppo tardi, ho deciso di pubblicare questo materiale ogni mese nel corso dell’anno successivo, aderendo alla struttura originale del progetto. Per garantire la massima qualità, ho richiesto l’apporto del talentuoso produttore Sean Williams, che ha diligentemente ri-editato, mixato e masterizzato queste registrazioni: un viaggio sonoro da apprezzare al meglio con l’intimità delle cuffie. Queste pubblicazioni mensili culmineranno in una straordinaria performance e presentazione del libro nel maggio 2025, dove le eccezionali fotografie, poesie ed altri elementi testuali del progetto avranno il centro della scena.
Spesso mi viene chiesto quale sia stato il destino del piano, a distanza di dieci anni. Lo scorso anno, mi sono recato in pellegrinaggio per farne visita. Alla fine, dopo essermi fatto strada attraverso un mare di rovi, ho scoperto solo frammenti: un pugno di legno consumato, un ammasso di corde arrugginite e una collezione di chiavi di accordatura in ferro. Questi resti testimoniano un’esperienza che rimarrà per sempre nel regno dei ricordi preziosi.
